Guitar Finish Practice Box

This box was a practice box to experiment with the blond and amber shellac mixed up from flakes that I purchased from Stewart-McDonald.  The sides are rose wood as are those of the guitar.  A different grade and color.  The top and bottom are made from 1/4 inch ash plywood.   The guitar The keys in the mitred corners are from ash plywood.

The good sides of the ash plywood were finished by first wiping with blond lacquer and adding amber lacquer on top of that.  The lacquer did not apply smoothly over the ash.  Attempts at creating a sunburst pattern didn't work very well. Eventually I poured alcohol directly on the top and scraped the lacquer off.  This left a slight stain effect. (Need to test on spruce.) The guitar top is spruce which is softer wood.  However applying coats of lacquer as a sealer and then scaping with a straight edged razor blade leaves the top lightly stained and very smooth and scratch free.  I plan to apply the Tru-Oil to the spruce top after staining with lacquer and then scraping with a razor blade.  The Tru-Oil may have a yellow tint of its own.
Top and bottom pieces side by side.
Interior of boxes showing solid ash insets which allow the box to close tightly without any metal hinges.
Bottom side of bottom piece on the left shows the bad side of the ash plywood. Top of the top piece on the right shows good side of ash play wood.
